He was arrested on Tuesday and made his first court appearance in Mitchell County District Court yesterday afternoon. 27-year old El Salvadoran national Eli Clemente-Gonzalez was formally charged with 14-counts including 2-felony charges of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child and felony charges of Abuse of a Child.
The defendant is also charged with 2-counts of felony Aggravated Assault in which the indictment lists the involvement of a machete.
According to Mitchell County Attorney Mark Noah, the crimes occurred at the defendant’s home between January 1st and January 30th of this year.
It was necessary during yesterday’s proceedings to bring in an interpreter because the Spanish-speaking Clemente-Gonzalez had some difficulty understanding the court’s instructions.
Clemente-Gonzalez was eventually appointed a public defender and a preliminary hearing date was set for February 13th.
Bond was denied. Magistrate Judge Bonnie Wilson told Clemente-Gonzalez that because of the seriousness of the charges, he would not be offered bond.
