It may not prove to be as colorful as the Republican battle for that party’s Presidential nomination but… the flurry of fillings shortly before today’s deadline for the Beloit City elections, has certainly added a strong shot political intrigue to what looked like a one-horse race for each of this year’s 5-open positions.
Two filings this morning before the high noon cut-off means that 2-of the 5- races will be contested – the 3rd Ward Council Position and the position of Mayor.
Here’s how the election looks post filing deadline, 3-incumbents will run uncontested – Rick Brown in the 1st Ward, Denis Shumate in the 2nd Ward and Kent Miller in the 3rd Ward.
Newcomer Harry McGrath will battle it out for the 3rd Ward Council position with another political novice Lloyd Littrell while current 3rd Ward Council Member Tom Naasz will be challenged by veteran political office seeker David Chase for the Mayor’s job.
Local media mogul McGrath filed for office yesterday afternoon while opponent Littrell filed today just ahead of the High Noon dead-line. Littrell a former long-time city employee who at one time ran the City’s Water Plant, the Electric Plant and the Sewer Plant retired after a departmental reorganization last year.
The Mayor’s race pits council member and current Council President Naasz against political activist Chase who unsuccessfully run for a position on the City Council in 2010 and the Mitchell County Commission in 2008.
The Beloit City Elections will take place on Tuesday, April 3rd.
