Right now as I speak, they’re busily putting the finishing touches on the new law enforcement center on the North Campus in Beloit.
The old Beloit Juvenile Correctional Facility building has been turned into a modern 44-bed jail and state-of-the-art law enforcement facility that will be used by the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department and the Beloit Police Department.
An open house has been scheduled for this coming weekend to allow the public to tour the facility before prisoners are moved in.
The facility will also allow the county to farm out extra beds to out-of-county-inmates at $30.00 per head, per day.
One of the issues that has surfaced is the question of security. Some community members are concerned with the county jail right across the street from Beloit Jr/Sr High School and right next door to the building that will soon house Beloit’s new library.
Jail Administrator Jerri McCune says the security system at the new LEC is
state-of-the-art. It was installed by File Safe out of Salina – the same folks who designed the security system at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility.
McCune encourages the public to tour the facility on Sunday and take a good, hard look.

Additionally, McCune says the addition of the Sally Port to the building’s east side means no one will ever see any of the prisoners, coming or going.
Again the new LEC open house takes place this coming Sunday, January 15th. Tours of the building will be conducted starting at 1:00 0’clock and go until 4:00.
