Prescribed Burn Workshop

There are a number of Prescribed Burning Workshops that will be conducted across the State of Kansas in January and February.

13-workshops are scheduled but the only local one taking place will be in Beloit next week, Wednesday, January 18th. The Beloit workshop will be held in the Community Room at the Guaranty State Bank and is scheduled to start at 1:30:-PM.

Carol Blocksome from the Kansas State University Agronomy Department says the workshops are a continuation of a multi-agency effort to inform producers about prescribed burning. Blocksome also said fire safety and burning techniques are the priority topics.

One of the areas listed as an agenda item for the workshop is liability… a topic that may touch some sensitive nerves locally. Last year during the burn season, a grass fire that got loose in southern Lincoln County sent 2-firefighters to the hospital.

And in Mitchell County, the County’s Fire Chiefs pushed for and got greatly increased financial penalties for those who do not follow the county’s burn notification policy and the burn procedure rules.

Carol Blocksome gets the last word saying, “Safe burning requires proper planning, education and training.” She adds, “I encourage any producer who is thinking of burning grassland in Kansas to attend one of these workshops.”
